Destiny 2

We are about to see the release of another new subclass in Destiny 2 in just a few weeks when Lightfall introduces Strand. We’ll be pulling on the (green) fabric of reality to make grappling hooks, rope darts, micro-missiles and uh, Titan drillbit hands. But before that, we should reflect on the past year of subclass 3.0 updates that we got instead of a new subclass with The Witch Queen.

I ran a poll about this the other day, and will admit I was slightly surprise with the results. With 22,000 votes in, this feels like a decently comprehensive sampling. So, here’s a breakdown of the results:

Surprised? Not surprised? Let’s get into it:

Void (40.8) – By far the winner in the poll here, even though I tried to influence it by saying Arc was my personal favorite. But it’s hard to argue with the strength of void. There are a few main aspects here which make Void absurdly strong. One is Devour, which allows you to constantly heal and practically negates the need for recovery so long as there are enough enemies to kill. It makes Devour Warlock especially strong.

The second is the combination of Volatile Rounds and Repulsor Brace. Now Hunters can have permanent volatile rounds with the recent change to Gyrfalcon, but so can the other two class after grenade kills. Then, kills on volatile enemies trigger a recently buffed Repulsor overshield. And you can combine this with other strong things as well. Weakening grenades. Invisibility on Hunter. Overshields and controlled demolition on Titan. It’s incredibly strong.

Destiny 2

Arc (26.1%) – This is my pick, though it’s well behind void here in the poll. Arc has strengths on all three classes, albeit it’s missing the healing/protection of the other two light subclasses. Warlock has ionic traces for days for instant ability regen and a recently buffed arc buddy. The bad news is that it also has some of the worst supers in the game right now. Hunters have a truly wild punch-based, jolt-infused combo that hits like a truck. Titans have one of the most powerful builds in the game in the form of Heart of Inmost Light storm grenades. And in general, speed/handling buffs from being Amplified feel great across the board.

Destiny 2

Solar (25.5%) – Probably the most passionate group of people I heard were those swearing Solar was the best, but it did lose the poll here. One of the strongest aspects of Solar is Restoration, arguably one of the best buffs in the game, even after recent nerfs. Solar also has scorch and ignition for both crowd clear and big single target damage. And Radiant is a near-permanent damage buff that’s easy to keep up. Well Warlock, of course, is one of the most mandatory classes in the game for damage encounters, and Starfire grenade chucking remains super strong. Titans have their hammer bonks. Hunters have fun builds like Caliban’s for massive explodey knives.

Stasis (7.7%) – And now, perhaps, we see that Light classes maybe got buffed so much they’ve left Stasis, the class they were trying emulate, behind. Not that there aren’t strong Stasis builds. Ager’s Scepter builds are great. Warlock turret builds are heavily used in GM level content for champion freeze and map control. But in general, with their single supers and focus on crystals, it’s just not quite as beloved as the new 3.0s on the light side.
