Sometimes I have trouble keeping track of the days. What day of the week is it? Is it Thursday already? What happened to Wednesday? I know I did stuff—I was actually really busy—but it’s like the day came and went and somehow didn’t exist all at the same time. Weeks bleed into weekends. Weekends slough off into weeks. One second it’s Friday, the next it’s the middle of the night on a Sunday—or was it Monday?

Time is a fickle thing. Or a flat circle. Or an inexorable tide.

It’s something we never have quite enough of, that slips by without us quite realizing. 2018 doesn’t sound that long ago, but it was five years. Five years ago my fifteen-year-old teenage daughter was a sweet little ten-year-old girl. My 12-year-old almost-teenager son was only 7. How did five years just happen?

Don’t worry, I’m not having an existential crisis. Sometimes it just hits me, and I find it all a bit much. The change. The speed at which life changes. I’m never quite ready for it.

So let’s count another day off with this Wordle, shall we?

I was a little sad that this one took me five whole guesses to solve. After all, that’s automatically -1 in my point scale. I assumed I had lost to the Bot, which would be another -1 for a total of -2 today. Not great!

However:

Me vs the Bot

Would you look at that! Wordle Bot also took five guesses! We tied! That means I only get a -1 today!

We had very different opening guesses—shale and slate—and neither were all that good. I narrowed my options down from 403 to 21 with toper (yeah, weird word but it worked!) and then down to just 3 with medic. Curiously enough, both the Bot and I guessed geeky for #4, leaving us each with just one remaining option: beefy, for the win.

I find this a very amusing word, both because it’s so superfluous as an adjective—when would I really use beefy instead of meaty, given that the “beef” is already implied; who, after all, would say “chickeny?”—and its slang meaning, which is usually to describe a “hunky” man (strong, but maybe also dim). Very antiquated, too, as I doubt a single woman or girl alive uses the word with any seriousness. Perhaps nobody ever really has.

Cheers and good fortune, oh thou Wordlers. It’s almost Friday!
