Why ‘Lost In Play’ Has The Best Video Game Credits – And Why You Should Play It With Your Children

I don’t finish that many video games, but when I do I rarely wait through all the credits. Lost in Play’s end-game credits aren’t just the best I’ve seen but a real highlight of the game. If you have children willing to play a point-and-click game with you, go dive into it with them now.

If you’ve not played it, Lost In Play is a feel-good adventure about a brother and sister exploring their dreams. Lost in their imagination, Toto and Gal solve puzzles to journey back home. Think point-and-click adventure but in the style of Gravity Falls. Play combines point-and-click item collecting and puzzle solving along with neat mini-games. It stands out from the quality of characters, puzzles and storytelling.

It’s a game I loved playing myself, but made me wish I had young children who I could play it with still. It’s like a living breathing cartoon with characters, animation and music of a quality I’ve rarely seen in this type of game. Throughout the game (minor spoilers here) play flips between the fantasy and the real world. It’s a lovely way to revisit the joy of imagination and how embroiled children get in the made-up games they play.

You move the narrative forwards by solving point-and-click puzzles. Thankfully things are more streamlined than usual here. Solutions are always logical and there’s a sense you can work things out even if you do get stuck. There’s also a really well-judged hint system that gets you on your way without just answering puzzles for you.

The crowning glory of all this is, unexpectedly, the ending. Once you have finished the game the credits roll, and with them a series of photos. At first I thought these were just assets reused to break up the text. But then it clicked, these are images of what the young heroes were doing in the real world while you played in their imagination.

These pictures range from playing games of chess under tables to dipping toys into fish tanks or using magnets to fish for metal toys. Each of these brings back memories of the moments in the game they relate too and was a magical way to underline how not only the characters, but you the player, have been happily lost in play.
