Almost Eight Weeks Later, ‘Wednesday’ Is Still Ascending The Netflix Top 10 List

Netflix may be getting flak for cancelling shows left and right after a season or two, but when they find a hit, man, they really find a hit.

I’ve been watching the behavior of Wednesday on Netflix for nearly two months now, as the show was released on November 23, 2022, and here, nearly eight weeks later, is not still hovering inside the top 10 list, but it’s actually climbing through the top 5 again, currently sitting at #3.

I think after all this time, I’ve only seen Wednesday dip as low as #5, at least in the US. And while a half dozen other shows have hit #1, Wednesday was there at least 3-4 different times, surging after new shows came and went.

Currently, the list is Ginny and Georgia at #1, Vikings Valhalla at #2 and Wednesday at #3. Third party shows like New Amsterdam and The Walking Dead are already tumbling down the list. The previous #1, Kaleidoscope is already down to #6 after being unseated by Ginny and Georgia.

Finally, when writing about Wednesday for the dozenth time, I can say that it now has been renewed by Netflix for season 2. This was always obviously going to happen, but there were perhaps some issues with the rights with MGM and its new owners, Amazon, but none of that was ever made public, if so.

Wednesday itself has now hit 1.5 billion viewing hours, its longevity helping rack up a truly insane total for a first season, unmatched by anything except Squid Game at 2.27 billion hours. Over the long haul, I do wonder if Wednesday could somehow catch it, albeit another 700 billion hours is a large gap. I did not, however, expect to see Wednesday at Netflix’s third most watched series after eight weeks either though.

At this point, it’s just a snowball effect. So many people have heard about Wednesday that everyone feels like they need to watch it eventually. It’s all over TikTok and Instagram, the season 2 renewal news just hit, Jenna Ortega was at the Golden Globes fielding questions about her dance moves. Unlike most Netflix series, it really has not de-surfaced from public view even after two months here.

It’s kind of amazing because the show is just…okay? Yes, Ortega’s central performance elevates it, and is the main reason for its success, but at its core, it a teen supernatural mystery show not that dissimilar from something like Sabrina or Nancy Drew. And the mystery wasn’t really that interesting! I’m hoping for more in season 2, though really, more Ortega as Wednesday doing anything is going to be enough to make the second season a huge hit, that much is clear.
